PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (15-6, 2-2 WCC) dropped their series opener against the San Francisco Dons (13-11, 2-2 WCC) 3-1 at Joe Etzel Field. The loss snaps Portland's three-game winning streak.
Caleb Franzen took the loss for Portland, dropping to 1-4 on the year. He went six innings with six strikeouts and two runs allowed. Owen Stevenson earned the win for San Francisco after allowing only one run in 6.2 innings.
There wasn't much offense for the Pilots, who only had one run and five hits on the day. Ben Patacsil was the only batter with two or more hits, going 2-for-4. Briley Knight also went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
San Francisco scored both of their runs in the first two innings. The Dons scored in the first inning off a solo home run courtesy of Gabe Giosso. They followed that up the following inning with a sacrifice fly to put their lead at 2-0.
It was a defensive battle for the next two innings until the Pilots finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on first and second, Knight lined a single through the right side that brought Jake Holcroft home. The Pilots were within one.
The offense was not prevalent in the later stages of this one. The Pilots started getting players on base, but just couldn't capitalize on their opportunities. They would fall 3-1.
The Pilots and Dons will play Game 2 tomorrow at 1 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video.
