PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (15-7, 2-3 WCC) dropped a marathon 14-inning game 4-3 to the San Francisco Dons (14-11, 3-2 WCC), giving the Dons the series. It was the longest game the Pilots have played since the 1992 season.
Joey Gartrell took the loss for Portland after allowing the winning run in the 14
th inning. He went 2.1 innings with that being the only run allowed. Brett Gillis was solid in the start with only one run and three hits allowed with eight strikeouts in six innings. Portland went through four pitchers on the day. The closer Sam Beck earned the win for Dons.
The Pilots had three runs off 10 hits, with only two batters posting two hits or more. Gabe Skoro was the top batter, going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI's. Ben Patacsil also had multiple hits, going 2-for-7.
Portland started the scoring early, with three runs in the first inning. Patacsil made his way home first, scoring off a wild pitch from Lombard. Then two more runs were scored courtesy an RBI single from Gabe Skoro. The Pilots led 3-0 early.
After that, the bats went silent for four innings until the Dons finally got on the board in the sixth. Kyle Knell hit a single to right center that got the Dons one run in the top of the sixth. It was the only run that Gillis would allow on the day.
Trouble began for the Pilots in the eighth inning. San Francisco manufactured two runs, with one coming via an RBI triple by Mario Demera and another off an RBI single from Harris Williams. That tied it up at three. The Pilots could not break the tie, with the game headed to extra innings.
Both teams were held scoreless for four innings until the Dons found the go-ahead run. With two runners on base, Demera hit a liner right up the middle that gave speedster Luke Keaschall just enough time to get home. The Pilots couldn't muster up another run, as the Dons would win 4-3.
The series finale will take place tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on Portland's CW. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and streaming options as well.
