PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (16-7, 3-3 WCC) avoided the sweep and got back up to .500 in conference play with an 8-2 victory over the San Francisco Dons (14-12, 3-3 WCC).
Eli Morse earned his fifth win of the season in dominant fashion, going seven innings with only one run and five hits allowed. He had a season-high 10 strikeouts, just one short of his career high. He also moved to third all-time in career strikeouts. Jesse Barron takes the loss for the Dons.
The Pilots had a solid day at the plate, driving in eight runs off 11 hits. Ben Patacsil was the top batter for Portland, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI's. Gabe Skoro and Jake Holcroft were the only other batters with two hits or more, with each going 2-for-3. Briley Knight had two RBI's as well.
The Dons started the scoring on Sunday, with Gabe Giosso once again driving in a run. This time he did so off a double to right center, bringing home Luke Keaschall all the way from first. San Francisco had the early 1-0 lead.
The lead didn't last long. The Pilots would score the next eight runs over six innings to take a commanding lead. Their highest scoring inning was the second, bringing in four runs. Tony Boetto hit a sacrifice fly to bring in one run, Patacsil and Sam Brown each had RBI singles and Knight was hit by a pitch to make it 4-1 Portland after two.
Portland struck again in the fourth inning when Patacsil drove in two runs with a big double to left center. The Pilots followed that up in the fifth inning with one more run, coming via a walk in the fifth inning. The Pilots finished their scoring in the seventh inning when Brown made it home off a wild pitch.
San Francisco did score once more off a double from Harris Williams III to make it 8-2 Pilots, but the scoring stopped there. The Pilots won 8-2.
The Pilots will play one more game at home against the Washington Huskies on Tuesday, March 29 before hitting the road once more. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on Portland's CW. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video as well.
