LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Moses Wood scored 21 of his career-high 28 points in the second half as the No. 6 seed Portland Pilots pulled away from No. 7 San Diego 73-55 in the second round of the University Credit Union WCC Basketball Tournament Friday night at Orleans Arena.
The Pilots advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2017 and will face No. 3 Santa Clara on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
Wood hit a corner three-pointer to give the Pilots (18-13) a 43-37 lead early in the second half and then erupted with a series of highlight reel plays down the stretch. His four-point play made it 51-44 lead at the under-12 media timeout and then he beat the shot clock while fading out of bounds on the baseline to put the Pilots up nine.
A top of the key three-pointer pushed the Pilots ahead by double figures with five minutes remaining. He brought the crowd to its feet with a driving two-handed dunk and then capped the performance with another driving layup in the final two minutes.
Wood, a transfer from UNLV who earned All-WCC honorable mention honors, finished 9-of-15 from the field and 5-for-8 from three-point range.
Portland was without starting point guard Mike Meadows (back) and had four players log 39 minutes of action. Kristian Sjolund was huge with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. He scored 10 in the first half to lead the Pilots to a 34-29 lead at the break.
Tyler Robertson filled the stat sheet with 10 points, six rebounds and nine assists, while freshman forward Chika Nduka added 14 points and seven rebounds.
Portland held the Toreros (15-16) to 36 percent shooting from the field and just 3-for-20 from three-point range. The Pilots finished at 47 percent overall and 8-for-16 from beyond the arc. The Pilots dished out 18 assists and committed a season-low five turnovers.
Jase Townsend finished with 17 points and 8 rebounds for San Diego, while Terrell Brown added a double-double off the bench with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
