LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Portland women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 win over the Seattle U Redhawks in the opening match of the UNLV Invitational hosted at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on Friday.

The Pilots (4-4) navigated heavy winds to win five singles matches in straight sets.

Portland opened the scoring by claiming the doubles point with comfortable wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Rimona Rouf and Sally Pethybridge continued their dominant doubles play with a 6-2 victory at No. 2, while Aleksandra Dimitrijevic and Angela Schuster won their second straight match at No. 3 doubles to clinch.

Pethybridge then doubled the Portland lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Liliya Dimova. Rouf followed up with a 6-1, 6-1 effort at the No. 5 position against Aranza Sanabria and then Schuster clinched with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Jillian Rasmussen at No. 6 to move to 2-0 this spring.

Iva Zelic improved to 7-1 at the top of the lineup in dual matches with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Mireia Fehr and Marija Elenova closed the scoring with a 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles over Hannah Grossman.

The Pilots will continue action on Saturday at 10 a.m. against the New Mexico State Aggies. Portland then faces host UNLV on Sunday at 10 a.m.
