MORAGA, Calif. – Freshman Aleksandra Dimitrijevic continued her solid play of late with a singles win for Portland, but the Saint Mary's Gaels pulled out a 6-1 team win in West Coast Conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Korth Tennis Complex.
The Gaels (9-8, 4-3 WCC) secured the doubles point with a 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot and a close 6-4 victory at No. 1. Portland was trailing 5-4 at No. 2 singles when the point was clinched.
Dimitrijevic was leading Lene Mari Hovda at No. 4 singles 6-3, 3-2 and then won via retirement. The freshman has now won four of her last six dual singles match decisions.
Jana Tanevska pushed Gabriela Tevez at No. 6 singles but fell 10-3 in a third set super tiebreaker. In a quality match at the top of the lineup, No. 43-ranked Mariia Kozyreva held off Iva Zelic 7-6, 6-1. The Gaels won the other three matches in straight sets.
The Pilots (6-12, 1-6) conclude the Northern California road trip on Saturday at Pacific with a scheduled start time of 11 a.m.
