PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (21-15, 8-8 WCC) got up early and never looked back, beating the Pacific Tigers (11-25, 2-11 WCC) 15-3 in Portland. The win was Portland's largest of the season.
Brett Gillis earned the win after 6.2 innings with only two runs and five hits allowed and 10 strikeouts. The win was a team-high seventh for Gillis, and his 10 strikeouts marked the third time this season he's reached that total. Joey Gartrell also saw the mound for the Pilots, pitching 2.1 innings and getting five strikeouts.
The Pilots were dominant offensively, with 15 runs off 17 hits. Both of those totals are the highest they've reached since March 21, 2021, the last time they played Pacific. Seven batters earned two hits or more on the day and seven batters had RBI's. Henry Muench went 3-for-5 with three RBI's, his best game of the season. Ben Patacsil, Sam brown and Jake Holcroft each went 2-for-4, Jake Tsukada and Briley Knight went 2-for-5 and Nich Klemp went 2-for-3.
Portland scored the opening run in the opening inning, with Holcroft hitting an RBI single in the first. The Pilots then went scoreless in the second before scoring 11 runs in the third, fourth and fifth inning.
Four runs came in the third inning, all of them unearned due to a critical error by the Tigers. Sam Brown made it home off a poor throw to first. Muench scored two more runs for the Pilots off a big single that snuck through the right side. Tsukada had the final run of the inning off a single that dribbled down the left field line. The Pilots had a 5-0 lead after three.
Portland scored three runs the following inning. The Pilots again scored off a throwing error, with the Tigers bungling a throw to first. Knight snuck a double as well down the right field line that brought in two, making it 8-0 Pilots.
The Pilots kept piling it on in the fifth. Spencer Scott hit a double that brought in Tsukada for the first run. The following run came off a single right up the middle for Sam Brown. Ben Patacsil scored the final two runs for Portland in the inning, hitting a two-run single that made it 12-0 Portland.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the seventh inning, scoring two runs after the Pilots lost a ball in center field. The Pilots responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. One run came off a wild pitch and the other two came off another error for the Tigers. Portland maintained their lead at 15-2. The Tigers scored one more run in the eighth inning to put the score at its final.
