PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (22-15, 9-8 WCC) fended off a late push from the Pacific Tigers (11-26, 2-12 WCC) to win 5-3. The win officially gives the Pilots the series, their third WCC series win of the season.
Brock Gillis earned the win for Portland after going six innings with only two runs and five hits allowed. He also had six strikeouts in his third win of the season. Peter Allegro earned his eighth save of the season after pitching 1.1 innings. That save moves him to third all-time among Pilots in career saves.
The Pilots had five runs off seven hits at the plate. Jake Holcroft earned multiple hits again, going 2-for-3. Briley Knight was 1-for-3 with a team-high two RBI's. Sam Brown was also 1-for-4 with a home run in the first inning.
Portland once again started the scoring in the opening inning. Batting in the third spot, Brown belted a solo shot over the right field wall to give the Pilots a 1-0 lead. The home run gives him a team-high six on the season.
The Pilots struck again in the third and fourth innings. They scored one run in the third off an RBI single from Trace Tammaro. Then two more runs came off a big hit from Briley Knight. Knight's shot to right field gave Ben Patacsil and Jake Holcroft just enough time to make it home in the fourth. Jake Tsukada hit an RBI single to make it 5-0 Pilots after four.
The Tigers made a short comeback in the late innings, scoring three runs across the sixth and seventh innings. A solo shot from Thomas Gavello gave Pacific their run in the sixth. Then two more runs came in the seventh, one off an RBI single for Ben Nemivant and another after a prolonged pickoff gave Jarron Silva the chance to score from third. Portland still led 5-3 after seven innings.
Pacific had their chances, putting a runner on base in the ninth inning. But Allegro and company took down the final three batters to get Portland the win.
