HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (17-11) had their chances against the No. 5 Oregon State Beavers (21-7) but ultimately couldn't pull off the comeback, falling 5-1.
Brock Gillis took the loss for the Pilots. He started this one and pitched 5.1 innings with four runs allowed and five strikeouts. The loss is his third of the year. Jaren Hunter earned the win after going 5.2 innings with no runs allowed.
The bats were quiet most of the night for Portland, with the Pilots bringing home only one runner and totaling five hits. Briley Knight, Tony Boetto, Jake Holcroft, Ty Saunders and Ben Patacsil were the only Pilots to record a hit, with Knight hitting a homer in the seventh inning.
Oregon State started the scoring in the first inning. Garret Forrester got hold of a ball and sent it to right field to bring a run home and make it 1-0 Oregon State early. That remained the score for the next five innings.
The Beavers added to their lead in the sixth inning. Gillis walked three batters to load the bases before giving up an RBI hit yet again to Forrester. Gillis balked to drive in a second run, then Brady Kasper grounded out, but gave Jacob Melton just enough time to score. Oregon State had extended their lead to four.
Portland finally answered in the seventh inning. For the fifth time this season, Knight hit a moonshot out of the park that put the Pilots on the board. The Pilots did load the bases in the eighth inning, giving them hope, but they couldn't bring anyone home. Oregon State scored one more run in the ninth to set the score at its final.
Next up, the Pilots will host the San Diego Toreros for a three-game series at Joe Etzel Field. The first game is set for Friday, April 8 at 6 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for a live stream and stats.
