CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (26-18) saw their three-game winning streak snapped by the No. 2 Oregon State Beavers (39-9) with a 4-0 shutout loss. It's just the second time this season the Pilots have been shutout.
The Pilots' pitching staff allowed four runs off six hits, with Ryan Rembisz taking the loss. He went two innings with two hits and two runs allowed, walking five batters. Nick Nygard went the most innings at 4.2, throwing four strikeouts and allowed two runs and four hits. KJ Ruffo also pitched 1.1 innings.
The Pilots struggled offensively, with only three hits and no runs on the evening. Evan Scavotto went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double while Tony Boetto had one hit and earned a base after getting hit by a pitch.
Oregon State scored the first runs of the game in the third inning. With two runners on, Jacob Melton hit a ball to left center field that enabled both runners to score. Three innings in, the Beavers held a 2-0 lead.
The Beavers held the Pilots' offense at bay most of the game. The Pilots didn't earn a hit until Boetto hit a single through the right side in the fifth inning.
All Oregon State needed was two more runs in the seventh to get some cushion and finish things off. Melton hit another RBI single to bring in Wade Meckler, then Travis Bazzana hit an RBI double that brought home Melton. The Pilots went hitless in the ninth as they fell 4-0.
The Pilots will be back at it tomorrow, facing off against the Utah Valley Wolverines tomorrow at Joe Etzel Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video.
