PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (27-18) scored three runs in the seventh to overtake the Utah Valley Wolverines (16-32) and win 6-4. With their 27
th win, the Pilots have tied the 2012 squad for wins in a season.
Caleb Franzen gets the win after pitching 2.1 innings in relief and striking out three with no runs allowed. Four Pilots made appearances on the mound, with Peter Allegro officially earning the save after closing out the final 1.2 innings with three strikeouts and just one hit allowed.
Portland scored six runs off eight hits in this one. Jake Holcroft and Trace Tammaro were the only batters with two hits or more, with Holcroft going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI's and Tammaro going 2-for-3 with two RBI's. Evan Scavotto also had two RBI's in a 1-for-4 appearance.
The Pilots scored the opening run in the first inning. Tammaro hit a single that blooped into right field, giving Gabe Skoro enough time to make his way home. Tammaro's RBI single gave the Pilots an early 1-0 lead.
That lead evaporated in the following inning. With two runners on, Utah Valley's Connor Hall hit a moon shot over the wall in left center to give the Wolverines the lead 3-1.
The Wolverines got back on the board again in the following inning. They hit another homer, this time coming courtesy of a solo shot from Mick Madsen. That solo homer gave the Wolverines a 4-1 lead three innings in.
The Pilots closed the gap in the fourth inning, this time with a home run of their own. With a runner on base, Jake Holcroft dinged his fourth homer of the year over the right field wall, cutting Utah Valley's lead to one.
The seventh saw the Pilots finally overtake the Wolverines. Evan Scavotto got the Pilots the lead, driving two runs in off a single to make it 5-4 Portland. Tammaro helped the Pilots extend their lead with a sacrifice fly that made it 6-4. Allegro shut things down to give Portland the win.
The Pilots will play their final WCC home series this weekend against the Saint Mary's Gaels. The opener is Friday with first pitch set for 6 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video.
