PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots (30-18, 16-8 WCC) put up their highest run total since 2002 on the Saint Mary's Gaels (25-27, 9-18 WCC) in a 22-12 win. The win secured the sweep for the Pilots, their third such sweep in WCC play and their fourth this season.
With their 30
th win of the year, the Pilots are at 30 wins for the first time since 2010. Their 16 wins in WCC play also matches the 2002 Pilots in total WCC wins. Their WCC win streak extends to nine, which is a program record.
Eli Morse earned the win for the Pilots, his seventh of the year. He went five innings with six runs (three earned) and eight hits allowed and five strikeouts. He's eight strikeouts away from becoming the Pilots' all-time leader in strikeouts. Caleb Franzen and KJ Ruffo also each made appearances.
The Pilots accumulated 22 runs off 14 hits. Portland also recorded 12 walks, which is the third highest total the Pilots have ever put up in a game. Gabe Skoro went 3-for-3 with six RBI's on his senior day, Christian Cooney went 2-for-4 with four RBI's and Nich Klemp went 4-for-6 with a home run, a double and three RBI's. He was one triple shy of the cycle. Jake Holcroft also hit two doubles to round out the Pilots who earned multiple hits.
The Gaels got on the board first with a run in the second. Dalton Mashore scored that run for Saint Mary's with an RBI single right up the middle. They took a 1-0 lead early.
Not only did that lead not hold, it quickly turned into a massive deficit. The Pilots scored a season-high 14 runs in this inning, Five runs came off walks, another came in off a wild pitch and eight more came off big hits. The Pilots went through the order twice in the inning, with Skoro earning four of his RBI's in this inning alone. The Pilots held a whopping 14-1 lead just two innings in.
The Gaels scored two runs in the third inning off a two-run homer from Coleman Schmidt, but the Pilots earned those two runs right back. Skoro got his fifth and sixth RBI's of the game off another single, putting him at six.
After three innings, the Pilots held a 16-3 lead.
Saint Mary's had their biggest scoring inning in the fourth. They scored three runs in their frame, starting with a Gavin Napier groundout that brought home Kyle Velazquez. Schmidt hit another RBI with a single to score one run, then Mashore brought in another with an RBI single of his own. It was now only 16-6 Pilots after four innings.
But the Pilots truly shut the door on the Gaels with another monster inning, scoring five in the fifth. Klemp got things going with his second home run of the season, scoring two. Jake Tsukada then walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run, then Cooney hit a single up the middle to make it a 15-run lead for Portland. The Pilots scored one more run in the sixth with a triple to put the score at 22-6.
The Gaels had a big ninth inning, scoring six runs to cut Portland's lead 10, but it was too little too late. The Pilots won 22-12.
