MALIBU, Calif. – The Portland Pilots (31-21, 17-10 WCC) ceded the rubber match to the Pepperdine Waves (24-26, 12-15 WCC), losing the series after a 3-1 loss in the finale. The game was the final regular season match for both teams.
Despite the loss, the Pilots still finish the regular season with a 31-21 record overall and a 17-10 record in WCC play. At 31 wins, this is just the fourth time in program history the Pilots have eclipsed at least 30 wins in a season and the first time since 2010. The 17 wins in WCC play are the most since the Pilots joined the conference in 1996. Their second-place finish in the WCC standings is the highest in program history.
Joey Gartrell took the loss after allowing two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Eli Morse started his final regular season game as a Pilot, going four innings with just two hits and one run allowed and three strikeouts. Caleb Franzen also went three innings with two hits and no runs allowed and four strikeouts.
Portland had 10 hits on the day but only brought in one run. Almost every Pilot had a base hit today, with Jake Holcroft and Spencer Scott being the only two batters with multiple hits. Holcroft went 2-for-4 with a double while Scott was 2-for-3 with a double. Riley McCarthy had the only RBI hit and was 1-for-4 on the day.
The Pilots scored the first run in the third inning. McCarthy snuck a liner through the right side of the infield, allowing Holcroft to make it home from third to give Portland an early 1-0 lead. The Waves responded in the fourth inning, however, scoring off a sacrifice fly from Cam Conley to tie things up at one.
Things went to a stalemate from there, with no runs scored for the next three innings. Unfortunately for Portland, that would not hold. Pepperdine held the Pilots scoreless in the top of the eighth and loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning. Greg Mehlhaff then sent a single right up the middle to bring two runs home and give the Waves a late lead. The runs were enough to give Pepperdine a 3-1 win.
Next up, the Pilots are headed to Stockton, Calif. for the WCC Tournament at Banner Island Ballpark. It is the first time the Pilots have ever earned a berth to the tournament, even earning a first-round bye after finishing second in the WCC regular season standings. The tournament runs from May 25 to May 28, with the Pilots playing on May 26 at 7 p.m. against whoever is the second-lowest remaining see.
