The University of Portland Pilots are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX with a 50-day celebration of notable women and teams in Pilots history. The celebration will kick off on May 4 with a woman or team recognized every day until June 23, the 50th anniversary of Title IX being signed into law.
Â
"Title IX is about access to education, and millions of women have access to the educational, leadership, and professional development lessons that are learned by participating in sports because of the passage of Title IX," said Karen Peters, Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator for the Pilots. "Portland has a rich history of women student-athletes and women's teams, and we are excited to celebrate many of the accomplished women that have been a part of Pilot athletics on and off the field."
Â
Title IX is a Federal law that prohibits discrimination based on sex or gender in any educational institution that receives federal funding. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
Â
"We have so many wonderful women's athletics stories, and accomplishments, here at Portland," Vice President for Athletics Scott Leykam said. "Our robust network of current student-athletes and alumni have achieved remarkable results in competition but are also some of the best representatives of our fine University. We are proud to share a number of those accomplishments leading up to this important anniversary that was so influential in providing opportunities for women in athletics."
