SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has announced the conference schedule for the 2022-23 season. The conference schedule features 18 games, with a home and away against each WCC program.
Portland begins conference play on Dec. 17 at the Chiles Center, welcoming the San Diego Toreros before taking on the BYU Cougars on Dec. 19. The Toreros finished the regular season a game behind the Pilots with a 16-14 overall record and an 8-9 conference finish to take sixth. BYU, meanwhile, was consistently a Top 25 squad all season long, taking first in the WCC regular season with a 26-3 record overall and a 15-1 WCC record. The Cougars were a six seed in the NCAA Tournament, falling to the Villanova Wildcats in the first round.
The Pilots will play on the road for their next two games, taking on the Loyola Marymount Lions on Dec. 29 and the Pepperdine Waves on Dec. 31. The Pilots went a combined 3-1 against both teams in the regular season, including a win over LMU in the quarterfinals of the WCC Tournament. They will make their way back home after that, with games against the Santa Clara Broncos and the San Francisco Dons on Jan 5 and Jan 7 respectively. The Pilot split their games against both of those teams in the regular season.
The last game of the three-game homestand will see the Pilots face off against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Jan. 14. The Bulldogs finished second in the WCC with a 26-6 record and a 15-2 conference record. They won the WCC Tournament to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Round of 32 with a win over Nebraska before falling to Louisville.
The Pilots will be back on the road for their next two showdowns, with games against Saint Mary's and Pacific on Jan. 19 and Jan. 21. With those final showdowns against those squads, Portland will cycle back through their matchups, starting with home games on Jan. 26 and Jan. 28 against Pepperdine and LMU.
Portland plays Santa Clara on Feb. 2 and San Francisco on Feb. 4 before their rematch against the Zags in Spokane on Feb. 11. Following that, the Pilots will play their final homestand of the regular season. They'll play Saint Mary's on Feb. 16 before taking on Pacific on Feb. 18 to close out basketball in the Chiles Center. The Pilots end the regular season with road rematches against BYU and USD on Feb. 23 and Feb. 25.
