SAN MATEO, Calif. – For the second week in a row, Pilot goalkeeper Bre Norris was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Week. This is the third time in her career she's earned the award.
Norris was stellar once against between the pipes, collecting 10 saves across two shutout wins over the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine. Norris has collected at least five saves in four of the Pilots six matches this season. She has also helped Portland maintain shutouts in five of their last six contests, making this the third time since 2010 that the Pilots have maintained a shutout streak of five games or longer. The Pilots also have posted shutouts in five of their first six games for the first time since 2005, the year they won the national championship.
The Boise, Idaho product is currently tied for the conference lead in minutes played at 540 and is also second in saves (29) and save percentage (.935). She is the only WCC goalkeeper to help her team earn five shutouts so far this year. She is also the only player so far this year to twice earn WCC Player of the Week honors, and she is the first Pilot to do so in back-to-back weeks since Madison Zamora in the spring 2021 season.
This past week's wins extended Portland's shutout streak to five and their unbeaten streak to six. That unbeaten streak to start the year is their best since the 2010 season. The Pilots are tied with Pepperdine for the best record in the conference at 4-0-2.
Next up, the Pilots will host some rivals from up north in the Seattle U Redhawks and the Washington Huskies. The Redhawks will come to Portland on Thursday, Sept. 8 for a 7 p.m. kickoff while the Huskies will be down on Sunday, Sept. 11 for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Check PortlandPilots.com for more information.
