SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Pilot men and women start off the 2022-23 indoor season at the University of Washington Indoor Preview with personal best and all-time marks. The Pilot performances were highlighted by Laura Pellicoro's indoor school record in the 3,000 meter event (9:05.91), Yutaka Roberts' No. 2 All-Time performance in the 800 meter run (1:51.54), Sully Norheim's No. 5 All-Time mark in the 1,000 meter event (2:33.33), Courtney Klatt's No. 8 All-Time mark in the 3,000 meter (9:22.53) and Henry Mong's No. 9 All-Time performance in the mile (4:02.62).
The men accumulated a total of 14 personal record marks to cap off the day. In the 3,000 meter, Paul Law and Evan Delacruz finished 3-4 in heat one to set personal records of 8:43.31 and 8:44.26. The duo was followed shortly after by AJ Reyes who finished just shy of his personal record in 8:50.38. In heat two, Leo Donlea finished in a PR 8:23.82, leading his teammate, Cohen Williams to a PR of 8:45.20. In heat three, the Pilots went 1-2-3-6-9-12 led by Zak Kirk in 8:05.25. Kirk was followed by Teddy Buckley (8:14.05), Daniel Abdala (8:15.22), Nolan Hosbein (8:20.64), Chris Anderson (8:24.43) and Dalton Kaines (8:27.70). Kirk, Buckley, Abdala, Hosbein and Kaines all notched personal best marks for the 3000 meter distance. Jonas Gertsen capped off the men's 3,000 meter with a victory in heat four, running a personal best time of 8:02.99. In heat one of the mile, Tommy Paltzer made his collegiate track debut running 4:40.63. In heat four, Eliason Kabasenche finished third in his heat in a personal best mark of 4:06.03. Henry Mong rounded out the Pilot milers with another personal record running 4:02.62, good for No. 9 All-Time. Sully Nordheim finished third in his heat of the 1,000 meter event, finishing in 2:33.33 (No. 5 All-Time). The men's 400 meter dash saw Moe Ombougno run a personal best mark of 50.98, the Pilot's only male sprinter. In his collegiate debut, Yutaka Roberts ran 1:51.54 to finish second overall in the men's 800 meter race. Yutaka's time was also good enough for No. 2 All-Time in Pilot history.
"Impressive start for the Pilots today especially coming off of a vacation period! Really proud of everyone's efforts today," said Head Coach Rob Conner. "We had lots of guys pr most notably Zak and Eliason. Both are in great shape! Henry ran evenly basically going 60,60,60,62. That was five seconds faster than he has ever started a season so I feel we have a good shot of him breaking 4:00 in the coming weeks. That was Jonas' first indoor meet for us. He took the lead with 1000 to go so there is more there too. He will definitely break 8:00 next time out. Yutaka was significant today. That opener puts him in striking distance of Parker's school record so we will see how training goes in the coming weeks."
A total of 10 personal record marks were set by the Pilot women. Laura Pellicoro won heat five of the women's 3,000m race finishing in (9:05.91), taking roughly six seconds off of Veerle Bakker's mark of 9:11.90 from last year. Courtney Klatt secured a victory in heat four of the 3,000 meter in a PR mark of 9:22.53 - good for No. 8 All-Time. Klatt was followed by Mathilde Deswaef who finished 15th in 9:48.87, another PR. In the mile, Tait Rowley ran a PR of 5:20.83 to finish fourth in heat one. Junior Teresa Perez ran a personal best mark of 5:03.90 to win heat two of the mile, leading her teammate Tiahna Woodger to a PR of 5:06.40. Stina Pettersson finished in 4:58.11 to finish fourth overall in heat three to set a new PR in her Pilot track debut. Isabella Dreiling recorded a new best of 1:01.91 to place second in heat four of the 400 meter dash. Audrey Lewis ran 27.23 to finish third in heat six of the 200, followed by Isabella Dreiling who finished fourth in 27.46. Avery Gill was able to secure two heat-wins, one in the women's 400 (58.76) and another in the women's 200 (26.22). Concluding the women's 200 was Ella Parker who ran 27.10 to finish fourth in heat 10.
"Lots of great performances today," said Coach Ian Solof. "I was really impressed with how everyone ran. We had wins, PRs, top 10 marks, and a school record. It was a great start to our indoor season!"
The Pilots will be back in action next week on Saturday, January 22nd, when they host their first indoor meet of the season at the Chiles Center. For more coverage and information, visit PortlandPilots.com.
