PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland men's basketball team shot 58.3 percent from beyond the arc and led from start-to-finish in a 91-76 victory against the Pepperdine Waves at home Saturday.
The Pilots (11-11, 3-4 WCC) had five players score in double figures, led by Moses Wood, who had 17 points and five assists. Tyler Robertson added 16 points, seven assists and two steals and Alden Applewhite helped out with 15 points off the bench.
Portland took advantage of fantastic ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 21 assists on 31 made field goals. Robertson's seven assists led the distribution list for the Pilots.
The Portland defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 14 Pepperdine turnovers while committing 11. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Chika Nduka led the way individually for the Pilots with two steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 29-17 advantage, Portland went on a 15-0 run with 7:56 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Applewhite, to increase its lead to 44-17. The Pilots then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 50-34 advantage. Portland relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down 10 shots to account for 30 of its 50 points.
Portland kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Wood's three, to grow the lead to 72-57 with 9:12 to go in the contest. The Pilots held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 91-76 win. Portland capitalized on five Pepperdine turnovers in the period, collecting 11 points off those turnovers.
