MORAGA, Calif. – The Portland men's basketball team fell 85-43 to the Saint Mary's (CA) Gaels on the road Saturday at University Credit Union Pavilion.
Alden Applewhite led the Pilots (8-10, 0-3) with 13 points. Joey St. Pierre added nine points and seven rebounds off the bench and Kristian Sjolund chipped in as well with six points and six rebounds.
Portland was without second leading scorer Moses Wood for the third straight game, while Tyler Robertson made his return to the lineup after missing the previous two contests with an ankle injury.
How It Happened
Portland struggled out of the gate, falling behind 41-14 heading into halftime. The team made just 4-of-21 field goals and were 0-for-10 from three-point range.
Saint Mary's (CA) kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 58-24 advantage before Portland went on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 58-31 with 9:54 to go in the contest. Saint Mary's (CA) responded and outscored the Pilots the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 85-43.
