SEATTLE, Wash. – Portland has four of the eight singles quarterfinalists and a doubles semifinalist after Saturday matches at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships held at Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Pilots have been dominant in singles play throughout the event with a 15-5 collective record.
Singles semifinalists and doubles finalists will earn entry into the ITA Northwest Super Regionals, hosted at Stanford Oct. 20-22.
The Pilots will have a chance to qualify three players in singles as grad transfer Luka Vukovic and sophomore transfer Nikola Keremedchiev will meet in one of the quarterfinals matches. Maxim Groysman will face Gonzaga's Gus Krauel and Nicolas Ocana takes on Matthew Burton of Oregon in other matches.
Vukovic and Ocana will face Portland State's Jan Semerak and Andrea Brignacca in their doubles semifinal match.
"It is awesome to have qualified four of the eight quarterfinal participants," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "I'm more impressed with how we competed and got through some close matches today. Two of our freshmen won three set matches in the consolation draw and our only loss today was a close singles loss to a good player from Oregon by Fabian (Gusic). Close matches are obviously not always going to go our way, but the fact that we are scrapping and in there until the end gives us a chance for good things to happen.
"Doubles was another story. I take full responsibility for not doing great in doubles in this tournament. We have spent so much time working on specific areas of players' games that we have not put any focus on doubles. Several teams played for the first time together in this tournament. I'm not too worried that when the dual match season comes around we will be good to go with our pairings, especially with the experience of the fall under our belt."
The tournament concludes on Sunday with
live scoring available for all matches.
