PORTLAND, Ore. – Tyler Harris secured his second double-double of the young season with 22 points and 12 rebounds to help the Portland men's basketball team knock off the UC Riverside Highlanders 76-65 at the Chiles Center on Sunday.
In addition to Harris' strong showing, the Pilots (3-0) were led by Tyler Robertson, who had 18 points, and Alimamy Koroma added 10 points.
Portland shared the ball well in Sunday's game, racking up 16 assists on 24 made field goals. Individually, Vukasin Masic dished out the most for the Pilots with four assists and Juanse Gorosito also chipped in with three assists of his own.
Portland's defense held UC Riverside to only 33.3 percent shooting from the field, including 28.6 percent from beyond the arc.
Harris finished the game 7-for-11 from the field and made all eight of his free throw attempts. Through three games, the Hayward, Calif. native is averaging 19.7 points and 11.0 rebounds, while shooting 67 percent from the field, 60 percent from three-point range and 93 percent at the free throw line.
How It Happened
Portland benefitted early when UC Riverside head coach Mike Magpayo was ejected after being assessed a pair of technical fouls with 14:52 left in the first half. Gorosito made all four free throws and Chris Austin followed with a dunk to give the Pilots a 10-2 lead.
Portland used a 6-0 run with 1:37 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Chris Austin, to take a 38-30 lead into halftime. Portland took advantage of six offensive rebounds to score 10 second chance points out of 38 total in the period.
Portland kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 45-32 with 15:44 to go in the contest. The lead grew to as much as 20 points late in regulation, before the Highlanders closed the gap with a late spurt. The outcome was never in question down the stretch as Portland held on for the 76-65 win.
