PORTLAND, Ore. – The Pilots had five student-athletes earn College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors on Tuesday, with Camille Ashe, Brooke Miller, Bre Norris, Nedya Sawan and Isabella Yakel all making the team. It's the first time Yakel and Miller have earned the award and the second time for each of Ashe, Norris and Sawan.
The all-district teams recognize athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom, with the program honoring student-athletes at all the NCAA Division levels and the NAIA level. To qualify, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, must be in at least their sophomore season athletically and also must have played in at least 90% of contests or started in 67% of those contests. Select honorees are also nominated for All-American consideration.
Ashe was stellar along the back line for the Pilots this year, playing in all 17 matches with 16 starts. Ashe earned All-WCC First Team honors after twice winning WCC Player of the Week and captaining the Pilots defense to one of their best seasons in recent history. They allowed just nine goals through 17 matches, which is the fewest they've conceded since 2008. Portland's shutout percentage of .647 led the WCC and ranked second in the nation and their goals-against average was 10
th nationally (.529).
Miller played in all 17 matches for the Pilots, including six starts. She scored one goal for Portland, doing so against the Pacific Tigers on Sept. 30.
Bre Norris was one of the best goalkeepers in the nation this year, ranking eighth nationally in total shutouts (8) and 12
th in goals-against average (.529). She won WCC Goalkeeper of the Year and made the All-WCC First Team for the first time in her career as well.
Sawan was the top scorer for the Pilots this year, putting together seven goals and four assists for 18 points. Making the All-WCC Second Team, she led the conference in game-winning goals with four this year. Her seven goals on the year are the most by a Pilot since she herself scored 12 goals back in 2021.
Finally, Yakel was also an important part of the midfield and defensively for the Pilots. She played in 16 matches with 10 starts on the year for Portland.
The Pilots are coming off a 10-4-3 season that saw them post their best winning percentage since 2013. It's the third 10-win season the Pilots have posted under head coach Michelle French and also the first time they've had back-to-back seasons of 10 wins or more since 2013.
