SPOKANE, Wash. – Portland freshman Stefan Skobelev, as well as sophomore Nikola Keremedchiev and senior Nikolas Tvedt, each advanced in their respective singles draws following action Saturday at the Gonzaga Invitational hosted at the Stevens Center.
Skobelev defeated Alex Asenov of Idaho and Gus Krauel of host Gonzaga to reach the title match of the Red Singles Draw. He will face Yu-Shun Lai of Idaho on Sunday.
Keremedchiev knocked off Gonzaga's Tom Dunlap, while Tvedt came back for a three-set victory against Idaho's Matteo Masala in the White Draw quarterfinals. Tvedt will move on to face Leon Roider of Gonzaga in Sunday's title match.
No doubles matches were played on Saturday, but the Pilots were dominant in Friday doubles with the tandems of Oscar Brown and Skobelev as well as Tvedt and Luka Vukovic winning two matches each to reach the top-flight doubles championship.
"We struggled in the first flight today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "We lost some close matches against good players, but I'm not totally disappointed because some of the things that I was worried would come back and bite us at some point did today. Coming home with several weeks to really bear down and work on some of those things is important. Sometimes when you end the fall on a high note, you're a little less likely to attack the things that really need to be attacked. Tvedt and Keremedchiev did a good job in the second flight this morning. Skobelev also had his best day as a Pilot, winning two matches and avenging a loss from earlier in the fall."
The tournament concludes on Sunday. Follow the results on the
