SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Portland Pilots had seven players earn All-WCC honors on Wednesday, including Bre Norris who won WCC Goalkeeper of the Year. Norris also made the All-WCC First Team as well as Camille Ashe.
Portland's seven honorees are the most they've had since 2013. Alongside Norris and Ashe, Sophia Mattice, Nedya Sawan and Cally Togiai made the All-WCC Second Team while Katana Norman earned honorable mention. In her first year of action, Violet Rademacher made the All-WCC Freshman Team as well.
Norris is the first Pilot to ever win WCC Goalkeeper of the Year, an award that was first introduced in 2011. She won WCC Player of the Week three times this season and played every match in goal for Portland. Norris played the most minutes of any goalkeeper in the conference and also led the WCC in goals-against average (.529) and shutouts (11) and ranked second in save percentage (.836).
Ashe was also instrumental to the success of Portland's defense. She twice won WCC Player of the Week and anchored a Pilots back line that allowed just nine goals all season, the fewest since 2008. That Pilot defense also led the WCC in GAA, ranking 16
th nationally, and their shutout percentage of .676 was also tops in the conference and fifth nationally.
Mattice earned second team honors after a career-best season offensively. She scored nine points in the midfield with three goals and three assists, both the most she's ever tallied in a year. She played and started in all 17 matches, one of just five Pilots to do so this year, and was crucial on both sides of the ball.
Sawan was the top offensive player for the Pilots this season, posting 18 points with seven goals and four assists. Her seven goals were the most by a Pilot in two years, when she scored 12 goals for Portland. Her four game-winning goals led the WCC and ranked 31
st nationally, and her goal total was eighth in the conference.
Togiai is also one of the five Pilots to play all 17 matches, scoring one goal and adding four assists on the year. A crucial fixture in the midfield, her four assists were tied for the most for the Pilots on the season. Her one goal this year was the game-winning goal against Seattle U on Sept. 7.
Norman was another key presence along the back line for the Pilots, starting all 17 games for Portland. The defender was capable in both pushing the ball forward when needed and corralling opposing players, as she helped the Pilots put together one of their best defensive seasons in recent history.
Finally, in her first year of action Rademacher ranked second on the team in goals scored with four. The midfielder was crucial in set pieces and put away three game-winners for the Pilots, also second on the team and tied for second in the WCC.
The Pilots finished the 2023 season with a 10-4-3 record overall and a 4-3-1 record in WCC play. Their overall win percentage was their best since the 2013 season, and it was the third 10-win season the Pilots have had in six years under head coach Michelle French.
