Pilots Defeat Tough UNLV Team in Seattle

SEATTLE, Wash. – The Portland men's tennis team picked up a quality 4-1 win over the UNLV Rebels in a neutral site match Saturday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Pilots improve to 3-3 on the season and snapped UNLV's six match winning streak.

Portland had a strong doubles showing to take the early lead. Sema Pankin and Nikolas Tvedt won 6-0 at No. 1 and then Oscar Brown and Nicolas Ocana clinched with a 6-2 win at No. 3.

UNLV evened the team score with a win at No. 1 singles, but Brown gave the edge back to the Pilots with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Aaron Bailey.

The four remaining matches all went three sets. Tvedt came back for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 and Maxim Groysman pulled out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win at No. 6 to complete the scoring. Eleftherios Neos and Ocana were in tight third sets when the match was completed.

"I think how close yesterday's match (vs. San Diego) really helped us today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Even though we didn't get over the hump, we carried that competitiveness into today. Whatever fatigue we had was made up for with a little bit more mental toughness in big points. Nik Tvedt had a huge come from behind win for us. Oscar remains rock solid and it was awesome to see Max get the clinch in his home city."
