SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Portland men's basketball team shot 50 percent from the field and three-point range, but fell to the San Francisco Dons 92-89 on the road Thursday.
The game featured eight ties and six lead changes and came down to the final seconds before the Dons pulled out the win.
The Pilots (13-17, 5-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Moses Wood, who had 28 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Tyler Robertson tacked on 22 points and six rebounds and Chika Nduka and Mike Meadows added nine points apiece.
The Portland offense was very productive from beyond the arc, making 11 threes on 22 attempts. Wood was the most prolific shooter for the Pilots, draining five treys in the contest.
How It Happened
After falling behind 43-38, Portland went on a 6-0 run with 6:05 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Jack Perry, to take a 44-43 lead. The Pilots then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 56-53.
USF raced out to a 10-point lead early in the second half, but the Pilots responded with a 10-0 run capped by a pair of Gorosito free throws to tie the game at 73 with 9:46 left. The Dons went back up by seven before Robertson tied it with a two from the foul line and Wood put the Pilots on top with a tough baseline turnaround for an 82-80 lead.
Khalil Shabazz gave USF a two-point lead with less than two minutes remaining and then stole the ball at the other end when Portland was trying to call timeout, but the officials didn't notice. He then converted an and-1 in transition to put USF up five at 89-84. Robertson made two free throws before Tyrell Roberts hit a stepback to give the Dons a 91-86 lead. Wood drilled a three-pointer to make it a two-point game with 36 seconds left.
Portland forced a tough three from Shabazz that missed, but he was able to grab the long rebound with 3.4 seconds left and made one of two. Wood's desperation heave at the buzzer was off and the Dons escaped with the 92-89 win.
