LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Maxim Groysman earned a win at No. 5 singles, but the Portland men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at perennial power UCLA on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Groysman defeated Jeffrey Fradkin 5-7, 6-1, 10-7 in a three-set super tiebreaker.
The Bruins controlled much of the match as the Pilots were without graduate student Eleftherios Neos, who competed this weekend in doubles for his native Cyprus in a Davis Cup match at Tunisia.
UCLA raced to the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions and then won the other five singles positions in straight sets.
"They were a better team on paper than us and they played better than us today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "I think we saw some things that we need to improve to hang at this level going forward. Max did a nice job getting us a point on the board. The big thing after a match like this is that we need to make sure that we keep limiting the places that high-level teams can expose us. We have San Diego, who is just as good a team coming up and we need to make some adjustments. We will definitely learn from today and hopefully be stronger."
The Pilots return to the court to host San Diego on Friday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The match will have live streaming and scores available at PortlandPilots.com.
