STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots lit up the scoreboard in their 19-4 victory over the Pacific Tigers. It was their fourth WCC victory in a row and their seventh straight win against the Tigers.
Joey Gartrell (3-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Portland (14-7, 4-0). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out five.
Evan Scavotto's three extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-4 day, which included two doubles, a home run, two walks and seven RBI's. Briley Knight put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-6 with four RBI's. Jake Holcroft also contributed for the Pilots, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a triple, two walks and an RBI.
How it Happened
The Pilots scored in six different innings on the way to victory. They took advantage of some early Pacific mistakes, scoring off a walk in the second inning and again off an error in the third to take an early 2-0 lead.
Portland added three runs in the fourth inning. They scored once again off an error and again off a wild pitch before Briley knight hit an RBI single to left field that made it 5-0 Pilots through four innings.
Pacific added a run in the fifth, but the Pilots quickly responded with five more in the sixth. Knight and Scavotto each had RBI hits in the inning as the Pilots went on to make it 10-1 with just three innings to play.
The Pilots highest scoring inning came in the seventh. Scavotto hit a three-run homer after RBI hits from Knight and Ben Patacsil and Zach Toglia hit his second bomb of the year to add six runs for Portland and make it 16-1 Pilots. Both teams would score three more runs each to make it a 19-4 final.
