STOCKTON, Calif. -- Portland received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Pilots put 14 runs on the board and beat the Pacific Tigers 14-5 Saturday. The win clinched the Pilots' second WCC series of the season.
Nick Brink (2-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Portland (15-7, 5-0). The right-hander went 3.2 shutout innings while giving up three hits, allowing one walk and striking out three. Curtis Hebert also made an impact on the mound for the Pilots, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits.
In the batter's box, the Pilots were led again by Evan Scavotto, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a double, a home run and three RBI's. Jake Tsukada furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI's. Christian Cooney also contributed for Portland, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and three RBI's.
How it Happened
The Pilots got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with four runs in the top of the first inning. A two-run single off the bat of Ben Patacsil got things started, followed by RBI hits from Scavotto and Cooney to make it 4-0 Portland.
The Tigers failed to push any runs across before the Pilots built on their lead in the third inning. Portland scored two runs on Scavotto's homer, which brought the Pilots lead to 6-0.
Pacific narrowed Portland's lead to 6-5 with scores in the third and fifth innings before the Pilots stretched the advantage to 7-5 in the sixth inning. The Pilots scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Zach Toglia.
Portland held the Tigers without a run the rest of the game and piled on seven runs in the seventh inning to secure the win. Highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Tsukada and a two-run double from Cooney, the Pilots benefited from RBI singles from Toglia and Jake Holcroft as well as a fielding error, bringing the score to 14-5 in favor of Portland. The score remained 14-5 for the rest of the game, as the Pilots coasted to the win.
