The Portland Pilots split their doubleheader on Saturday with the Utah Valley Wolverines on Saturday, taking Game 1 6-2 but dropping Game 2 1-0. Below is the recap for both contests.
GAME 1 | Portland 6, Utah Valley 2
PORTLAND, Ore. --Â Right-hander Brock Gillis had everything working on Saturday, fanning 10 Utah Valley hitters over seven innings of work to help power the Portland Pilots over the Wolverines 6-2. In addition to his 10 strikeouts, Gillis (1-0) tossed seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and walking one for Portland (6-3).
Jake Holcroft led the way offensively for the Pilots, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame with a double and two RBI's. Evan Scavotto put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI's. Senior Nich Klemp also helped out, going 2-for-5 for Portland with a double and an RBI.
How it Happened
The Pilots got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Scavotto's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for Portland, with the second run coming off a sacrifice fly from Spencer Scott.
The Pilots then held the Wolverines scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Portland scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Holcroft and an RBI single from Scavotto, which brought the Pilots lead to 5-0.
Utah Valley narrowed Portland's lead to 5-2 before the Pilots stretched the advantage to 6-2 in the eighth inning. The Pilots scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Klemp. The score remained 6-2 for the rest of the game, as Portland coasted to the win.

» Gillis struck out 10 Wolverines hitters. It's the most strikeouts any Pilot has posted in a game this year.
» The 10 strikeouts are also a career high.
» Every Portland starter reached base safely in the win.
» Portland's highest scoring inning was the second, when it pushed three runs across.
» Portland grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.

GAME 2 | Utah Valley 1, Portland 0
PORTLAND, Ore. --Â The Portland Pilots were blanked for the first time this season in their 1-0 loss against the Utah Valley Wolverines in Game 2 of their doubleheader. The game was only seven innings.
Jack Folkins (1-1) took the loss on the mound for Portland (6-4). The right-hander went three innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing no walks and striking out three. Sophomore Nick Brink started the ballgame and went three shutout innings while allowing three hits, walking none and striking out four.
14 different batters saw action today for Portland. At the plate, the Pilots were paced by freshman Justin Tsukada, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a double. Freshman Jonas Salk compiled a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a double.
How it Happened
Portland managed two chances with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The Pilots last got a runner on third in the fifth, when junior Jake Tsukada made it 90 feet away from scoring with one out. Unfortunately, no one ever made it back to home plate and the Wolverines scored the lone winning run in the fifth.
