PORTLAND, Ore. -- Christian Cooney collected four RBI's to help propel the Portland Pilots past the Utah Valley Wolverines 7-5 on Sunday. The win prevented Portland from dropping the series.
Sophomore Ryan Rembisz (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Portland (7-4). The left-hander went one inning, giving up three runs, one earned, on two hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Senior Peter Allegro started the ballgame and went five innings, surrendering one run on one hit, walking four and striking out five.
Cooney went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk in addition to his four RBIs for the Pilots. Jake Holcroft put together a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-5. Nich Klemp went 2-for-5 as well while Ben Patacsil went 2-for-4 at the plate.
How it Happened
The Pilots were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first scored. Klemp came across to score the lone run of the inning for Portland and get them on the board off the sacrifice fly from Cooney.
The score stayed at 1-1 until the very next inning, when the Pilots put a run on the scoreboard once again. Portland scored on an RBI single off the bat of Klemp, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Pilots.
Portland's lead had disappeared once the sixth inning came around and turned into a 4-2 Utah Valley advantage, when the Pilots re-gained control at 6-4. The Pilots bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Cooney, an RBI double from Briley Knight and another score off a groundout.
The Wolverines gained ground, closing the gap to 6-5 until Portland added some insurance in the eighth. The Pilots notched a run on Cooney's two-out RBI double, bringing the Portland advantage to 7-5. The score remained 7-5 for the rest of the game, as the Pilots held on for the win.
