MORAGA, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots came up just short at the plate against the Saint Mary's Gaels, as they fell 5-2 on Saturday. The Gaels officially clinched the series with the win.
Brock Gillis (2-1) got the start for Portland (16-10, 6-2) and took the loss, his first of the year. Three Pilots recorded one hit on the day, with Zach Toglia, Jake Tsukada and Henry Muench each doing so. Nich Klemp did not record a hit, but brought in two runs across four at-bats.
How it Happened
The Pilots struggled at the plate and allowed two early runs in the first to innings to find themselves in a 2-0 hole. The Gaels followed that with a two-run homer from Christian Almanza in the fifth inning and an RBI single in the sixth from Jared Mettam that put Saint Mary's in the lead.
Toglia came across to score one run for Portland in the seventh inning and get them on the board. The Pilots kept the deficit at 5-1 before closing the gap further in the ninth, this time with Jake Tsukada getting across. Unfortunately for the Pilots, the ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short.
