MORAGA, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots put together an impressive comeback on Sunday, scoring six runs in the ninth to secure a 9-5 victory over the Saint Mary's Gaels. The win also means the Pilots avoid the sweep.
Jacob Dobmeier (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Portland (17-10, 7-2 WCC). The right-hander went two innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on three hits. Peter Allegro started the ballgame and went seven innings, surrendering two runs, both earned, on four hits, walking two and striking out seven.
Nich Klemp led the way offensively for the Pilots, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with a walk and an RBI. Ben Patacsil went without a hit but helped bring three runs across. Henry Muench also contributed, going 2-for-5 for Portland with two RBI's.
How it Happened
Trailing 2-0 after early scores from the Gaels, the Pilots first put runs on the board in the sixth inning. Klemp came across on the sac fly to score the lone run of the inning for Portland and get them on the board.
The Pilots kept the Gaels off the board before taking the lead briefly in the eighth. Portland managed to push across two runs in the inning off a groundout and a wild pitch, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Pilots.
Portland's lead was short lived after Bill Ralston hit a three-run homer to give the Gaels a 5-3 lead. Despite the homer, the Pilots didn't waver. Their bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Muench. Klemp had another RBI single as well, with the other three runs came off a walk and two errors, with Patacsil's drawn walk with two outs and the bases loaded giving Portland the go-ahead run. Dobmeier and company held off the Gaels defensively for the win.
