SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Nich Klemp collected three extra base hits to help lead the Portland Pilots over the San Diego Toreros 9-5 on Saturday. The win clinched the series for Portland.
Peter Allegro (4-3) got the win for Portland (19-15, 9-5). The right-hander went 7.1 innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on six hits, allowing three walks and striking out five. Kaden Segel also pitched well, going one shutout inning in the ninth while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out one.
Klemp's three extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-4 day, and included two doubles, a home run and an RBI. Briley Knight put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI's. Tristan Gomes and Evan Scavotto each contributed home runs as well.
How it Happened
The Pilots were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Portland's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Gomes and an RBI single from Patacsil.
The Toreros failed to push any runs across before the Pilots offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Portland scored three times, with an output that included home runs from both Scavotto and Knight, which brought the score to 7-1 in favor of the Pilots.
Portland kept San Diego without a run before building their lead to 8-1 in the fifth inning. The Pilots notched a run on Klemp's two-out solo home run off Conner Thurman.
Portland held the Toreros scoreless before building on their lead in the eighth inning. The Pilots scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Riley McCarthy, bringing the Portland advantage to 9-1. San Diego put four runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, all of them coming in the eighth, but the Pilots still coasted to the 9-5 win.

» Klemp record at least three hits for the seventh time this year, with all his hits leading to extra bases.
» Portland's highest scoring inning was the second, when it pushed four runs across.
» The Pilots had control of the rest of the game after jumping ahead of the Toreros 4-1 in the top of the second.

» Klemp and Knight hit homers in back-to-back games. For both players, it was their fourth home runs of the year.

» The Pilots have seven home runs in the series. Prior to the weekend, the Pilots had hit only seven home runs across 12 games.
» The Pilots out-hit the Toreros at an 11-7 clip.
» Portland went 5-for-6 (.833) with runners in scoring position.
» Portland pitchers limited San Diego to just 1-for-10 (.100) with runners in scoring position.
» Portland pitchers faced 38 San Diego hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and 13 fly balls while striking out six.
» With the series-clinching win, the Pilots have won the past two series against the Toreros. This is the first time they've won the series in back-to-back years since they did so in 2011 and 2012.
