PORTLAND, Ore. -- All nine starters reached base safely for Portland, helping the Pilots put seven runs on the board to beat the Gonzaga Bulldogs 7-4 Saturday. The win evens the series.
Peter Allegro (5-3) started on the mound and picked up the win for Portland (21-17, 10-7). The right-hander went six innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on five hits, allowing three walks and striking out five. Jacob Dobmeier earned the save.
Nich Klemp led the way offensively for the Pilots, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with two doubles and two RBI's. Zach Toglia compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and two RBI's. Christian Cooney also helped out, going 2-for-4 for Portland with a home run and two RBI's.
How it Happened
Trailing 1-0, the Pilots first put runs on the board in the second inning. They scored three runs, one off a sacrifice fly from Briley Knight and two more off Cooney's moonshot. Portland led 3-1 after two.
The Pilots then held the Bulldogs scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Portland scored twice on Toglia's two-run homer, which brought the Pilots lead to 5-1.
Gonzaga narrowed Portland's lead to 5-4 before the Pilots stretched the advantage to 7-4 in the seventh inning. The Pilots pushed two runs across on a two-run double from Klemp that scored Jake Holcroft and Evan Scavotto. The score remained 7-4 for the rest of the game, as Portland held on for the win.
