PORTLAND, Ore. -- Nich Klemp collected four hits, but the Portland Pilots fell to the Santa Clara Broncos 21-10 on Senior Day this Sunday. The Pilots still clinched the series.
Brock Gillis (3-3) started and took the loss on the mound for Portland (26-20, 15-9). Jack Folkins was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going four shutout innings while allowing two hits, walking one and striking out four.
In addition to his four hits, Klemp had three doubles and an RBI to lead the Pilots. His three doubles ties the program record for doubles in a game. Evan Scavotto put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBI's. Zach Toglia also chipped in for Portland, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a home run and an RBI.
How it Happened
The Pilots struggled mightily in the first inning, allowing eight runs. Portland's offense clicked, however, in the bottom of the inning and put up five runs, including a two-run home run off the bat of Scavotto. Klemp and Jake Holcroft also had RBI hits to make it 8-5 Santa Clara.
The Pilots deficit grew to 12-5 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the third inning. Portland scored three times, with two of them coming off RBI hits from Jake Tsukada and Ty Saunders. It was 12-8 Broncos after three.
Santa Clara expanded their lead to 15-8 before the Portland offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 15-9 in the sixth. The Pilots scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Briley Knight.
Portland held the Broncos off the board before narrowing the gap further in the eighth. The Pilots picked up a run on Toglia's two-out solo home run off August Souza, bringing the score to 15-10 in favor of Santa Clara. The Pilots were unable to get any closer, as Santa Clara added six runs to their tally in the ninth on the way to a 21-10 final.
