PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots women's soccer team has added grad transfer MacKenzie Frimpong-Ellertson to the roster for the 2023 season, head coach Michelle French announced on Wednesday. She comes to The Bluff with one year of eligibility remaining.
"MacK is an incredibly instinctual player who seems to effortlessly find spaces and pockets to break down an opponent, whether on the dribble or with a creative final pass," French said. "It's clear she not only has an eye for of the game, she also possesses an immense passion and desire to compete and improve."
Frimpong-Ellertson joins the Pilots after spending four years in Pullman as a midfielder for the Washington State Cougars, having joined WSU as the No. 28 ranked prospect in the country per TopDrawerSoccer. She played in 73 matches with 50 starts for the Cougars, accumulating six goals and eight assists over those appearances.
She earned Pac-12 All-Freshman Team honors after scoring four goals and adding an assist in 2019 and also led WSU to the NCAA Sweet 16 with the game-winner over Virginia that same year. Frimpong-Ellertson also led the Cougars in assists in the 2020-21 season with four and tallied one goal and two assists in the 2022 season. Frimpong-Ellertson's mother is also former United States Women's National Team player and Pac-12 Hall of Famer Tina Frimpong-Ellertson.
The Pilots are coming off their best season since 2013, finishing with a 12-5-4 record and making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nine years. The Pilots advanced to the second round of the tournament after defeating the Arizona State Sun Devils in the first round for their largest playoff victory since 2009 before narrowly falling to the No. 1 overall seed Alabama Crimson Tide.
