PORTLAND, Ore -- The Pilot Mens' Cross Country and Track programs announce their 2023-24 rosters, including 12 newcomers, including three transfers and nine freshmen.
The transfer students joining the Pilots will include:
Thomas Chaston from Colorado State comes in with an impressive resume having competed at the NCAA West Regional Championships in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. His PR in the event sits at 8:47, which would place in the top-10 all-time at University of Portland. Along with this, Chaston placed 11th at the NCAA Mountain Region Cross Country Championships, earning all-regional honors.
Trey Gannon comes to the Bluff from University of Pittsburgh with personal bests of 3:49 in the 1,500 meter and 8:10 in the 3,000 meter events.
Adrian Stuphan transfers to Portland from Xavier University, making him the second Pilot on the team to transfer from Xavier behind Courtney Klatt. Stuphan joins the Pilots with a personal best mark in the 5,000 meter event of 14:26.
Nine freshmen will join the team, including:
Anthony Giesch from Newburg HS in Oregon comes in with PRs of 3:59 in the 1,500 and 8:22 in the 3,000 meter. Giesch also finished fifth at the Oregon 6A State Meet in the 3,000 meter discipline where he ran his personal best of 8:22. Giesch also placed ninth at the 2022 Oregon 6A State Cross Country Championships.
Nathan Short of Folsom HS in California will come in with bests of 4:13 in the 1,600 meter and 9:08 in the 3,200 meter.
Nathan Stein from Ashland, Oregon will joint the Pilots with personal bests of 1:54 in the 800 meter, 4:01 in the 1,500 meter and 8:27 in the 3,000 meter discipline. Stein finished his senior season placing second in the 800 and third in the 3,000 meter at the Oregon 5A State Meet, running his PRs in both races. On top of these performances, Stein placed fourth at the Oregon 5A State Cross Country Championships in Fall of 2022.
Juan Diego Contreras of the Dalles, Oregon comes in with bests of 3:57 in the 1,500 and 8:35 in the 3,000 meter. Diego Contreras placed 4th and 7th in the 1,500 and 3,000 meter at the Oregon 4A State Meet to finish off his senior year. In cross country, he also placed second in the 4A division at the Oregon State Championships.
Canyon White from East HS in Salt Lake City, Utah will join the Pilots with two All-City Meet championships under his belt. White was also coached by Andy Gorder, an alumni of the University of Portland who graduated in 2007 with his bachelors degree, and again in 2008 with a masters degree.
Jacob Hupke from Moreau Catholic HS in California will join the Pilots with marks of 4:12 in the 1,600 and 9:16 in the 3,200 meter race. Hupke placed 12th at the 2022 California State Cross Country meet, as well.
Alex Althaus from Milpitas HS in California comes to the Bluff with times of 4:24 and 9:18 for the 1,600 and 3,200 meter disciplines, respectively.
Andrew Gannon of Lower Merion HS in Pennsylvania will join his older brother, Trey, for their first year on the Bluff. Gannon's high school bests in each were 1:55 in the 800 meter and 4:19 in the 1,600 meter.
Kamren Mattison of Kelso HS in Washington will be joining the Pilots with a best of 4:27 in the 1,600 meter event.
Finally, Gabriel Morrow of Liberty HS in Oregon joins the Portland Pilots with a PR of 1:59 in the 800 meter discipline.
"We have a nice group coming in," said head coach Rob Conner. "The transfers are instant offense and all of the high school guys are great college prospects. We are looking forward to working with all of them!"
