MORGANTOWN, W.va. -- The No. 16 West Virginia Mountaineers scored in the final five seconds of the match to defeat the No. 3 Portland Pilots 1-0 in Morgantown. The loss drops Portland to 3-1-0 on the year.
How it Happened
Portland kept West Virginia scoreless in the first half and played the Mountaineers even the whole way through. They made a late push searching for the go-ahead goal, but couldn't quite get the shots on frame. In the final seconds, West Virginia pushed forward and managed to get the goal off the foot of Marcus Caldeira.
Miguel-Angel Hernandez led Portland with three saves. The Pilots recorded 10 shots in the loss, one of them on goal. Portland faced nine West Virginia shots, four of them on goal.
Game Notes
- The loss is the first of the year for the Portland. It is also the first time they've been shut out this season.
- Hernandez totaled three saves for the Pilots out of nine total Mountaineers shots.
- Portland has still only allowed three goals through four matches this year.
