SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – For the fifth time this season, Portland Pilots guard Dyani Ananiev was named the WCC Freshman of the Week. She has the most Freshman of the Week honors of any WCC player this season.
Ananiev earned the recognition after scoring eight points a game across two wins for Portland over the San Diego Toreros and Santa Clara Broncos. Along with that she shot 50% from the field and 40% from outside the arc while also averaging two steals and a block. Against Santa Clara, she scored 10 points along with three steals and two blocks, marking the fifth game this year where she's posted at least five blocks or steals.
This year, Ananiev is averaging 8.4 points per game 1.4 steals and one block per game. She is second among all freshman in points per game and is one of two players in the WCC to rank in the top 11 in both blocks and steals per game. Her five WCC Freshman of the Week awards are the most a Pilot has ever won.
The Pilots are 11-7 on the season and 3-1 in WCC play, having won their last three conference contests. They resume WCC play this week with a showdown against the Saint Mary's Gaels on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. The game is the first in a doubleheader with the men's team, who play the San Diego Toreros at 7:30 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
