SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots outscored the San Diego Toreros by 15 points in the second half to earn a 64-59 win on the road.
The Pilots (13-8, 5-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Emme Shearer, who matched her career high with 21 points and four steals. Kennedy Dickie tacked on 16 points and two steals and Maisie Burnham helped out with 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Portland did a great job disrupting San Diego shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Lucy Cochrane led the way individually for the Pilots with three rejections.
How It Happened
Portland struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-11 at the end of the first quarter. Portland then started off the second quarter by going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a spinning bucket from Burnham, to take an 18-17 lead. But they couldn't quite keep the Toreros at bay, with San Diego taking a 36-26 lead heading into the half.
After intermission, Portland cut its deficit to 46-38 before going on a 10-0 run to grab a 48-46 lead with 58 seconds to go in the third, entering the fourth quarter tied at 48. Portland played well near the basket, scoring 18 of its 22 third-quarter points in the paint.
San Diego snagged an early 54-52 advantage before Portland responded by going on a 5-0 run to seize a 57-54 lead with 5:26 to go in the contest. The Pilots fended off the Toreros the rest of the way for a 64-59 victory.
Game Notes
» The Pilots outscored San Diego 38-23 in the second half on their way to the win.
» Portland rallied from a 10-point 36-26 halftime deficit to pick up the win. This is the fifth time they've earned a win this year after trailing at half.
» The Pilots turned 26 turnovers into 31 points on the offensive end. They had 14 steals as well.
» The Pilots were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording five blocks as a team. Lucy Cochrane had three of those blocks, marking the 15th time this year she's had at least three blocks in a game.
» Emme Shearer led the Pilots with a career-high 21 points. It's the second time she's matched that career high this year, having done so earlier this year against Northern Arizona.
» Portland got a team-high seven rebounds from Maisie Burnham.
» This is the first official WCC sweep of the season for the Pilots. They are the third WCC team to reach five conference wins on the year.
» Kennedy Dickie has scored at least 15 points in each of the last three games.
» Maisie Burnham has scored at least 10 points in 16 games this year.
