SPOKANE, Wash. – The Portland volleyball team totaled 50 kills on the way to a three-set win (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) against the Gonzaga Bulldogs Saturday in West Coast Conference play at the Martin Centre. The victory improved the Pilots' record to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in WCC play.
The Pilots were led by a double-double from Maui Robins, who registered 17 kills and 14 digs on the day. Taina Kaauwai also added 12 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Tinoa Woodward-Hart chipped in for with 14 digs to go with three blocks from Nevaeh Bray.
Game Notes
» Portland had three players in double figures in kills, as Elin Larsson added 11.
» Larkin Chock had a team-high two aces and added 10 digs.
» Maui Robins registered a double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs
» Portland put together a strong attacking performance, notching 50 kills in the match.
» The Pilots had a .365 hitting percentage compared to just .168 for the Bulldogs.
» Portland collected 48 digs, while Gonzaga had 37 overall.
» Portland never trailed on the way to winning the first set 25-21.
» Portland attackers were helped by a match-high 39 assists from Havannah Hoeft.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Pilots grabbed control on the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to win the first set 25-21. Portland led by eight points at 16-8 before finishing off the set, collecting 16 kills along the way. Robins and Larsson led the way with five kills apiece.
SET 2 | Portland took set two 25-20 to promptly take a 2-0 lead. The Pilots briefly trailed 14-12, but used a 10-0 run on Chock's serve to pull away. Robins and Kaauwai collected four kills each, while Bray added two kills and a pair of blocks in the set.
SET 3 | Portland took the third set to finish off the match. The Pilots trailed by as much as five points midway through the set, but again rallied behind a stellar .429 attack percentage with 18 kills in the set. The Pilots rallied from down five at 14-9 to grab the win thanks to a 12-3 run helped by a trio of aces. Kaauwai finished the match with a kill for the 25-23 victory
