PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots shot 56.2% from deep on the way to a 93-44 exhibition win against the Willamette Bearcats at home Friday.
The Pilots had four players score in double figures, led by Maisie Burnham, who had 18 points, four assists and two steals. Emme Shearer added 17 points and two steals and Rhyan Mogel chipped in as well with 14 points and two steals off the bench.
Portland shared the ball well in Friday's game, racking up 21 assists on 37 made field goals. Individually, McKelle Meek dished out the most for the Pilots with eight assists. The Portland defense held Willamette shooters to only 29.8% from the field.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 15-5 advantage, Portland went on an 11-0 run with 4:11 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Mogel, to increase its lead to 26-5, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Portland did most of its damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 26 points close to the basket.
Portland kept its first-quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 8:23 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Burnham, to increase its lead to 38-9. The Pilots expanded the lead to 56-17 heading into halftime. Portland was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four 3-point shots to account for 12 of its 30 points.
The Pilots continued to dominate, starting a 7-0 run that pushed their lead to 80-34 with 1:08 to go in the third. Portland ended the third with an 82-37 lead. Portland took advantage of three Willamette turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of takeaways. The Bearcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Pilots still cruised the rest of the way for the 93-44 win.
