PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots put together a dominant performance, holding the LMU Lions scoreless and cruising to a 5-0 shutout win Saturday at Merlo Field. The victory boosted Portland's record to 5-4-7 overall and 2-0-4 in WCC action.
Four different Pilots scored on the night. Nick Fernandez, Connor Evans, Sebastian Nava and Nicky Dunbar put the Pilots on the board.
How it Happened
Portland broke the scoreless tie when Nick Fernandez recorded his third goal of the season in the 13th minute, assisted by Joe Highfield. Highfield played a through ball to Fernandez, who weaved his way through the defense to give Portland an early lead.
The Pilots went up 2-0 on a goal from Connor Evans -- his second goal of the season -- in the 23rd minute, assisted by Diego Rosas. Rosas sent it to Evans, who launched it from outside the 18-yard box into the top-left corner to make it 2-0 Pilots.
Portland went ahead 3-0 on Sebastian Nava's 54th-minute goal, his third of the season. Rosas and Fernandez assisted the goal. Nava set up just inside the box and punched it in for Portland.
The Pilots kept LMU off the board and grabbed a 4-0 lead with a 72nd-minute goal from Nicky Dunbar, his fifth goal of the season. Fernandez and Nava assisted the goal, Dunbar finishing off the goal with a sliding kick into the back of the net.
Portland increased its lead to 5-0 on Dunbar's sixth goal of the season in the 73rd minute, assisted by Rosas and Nava. His goal gave Portland a 5-0 lead, a score that would hold until the final.
