PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots took their first loss of the season on Monday, falling to the Oregon State Beavers in overtime 76-72. The loss ends Portland's 14-game winning streak.
The Pilots (14-1, 3-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Maisie Burnham, who had 21 points, six rebounds and six assists. Emme Shearer added 21 points and Dyani Ananiev added eight points, four assists, two steals and two blocks.
Portland forced 22 Oregon State turnovers while adding 11 steals. The Pilots turned those takeaways into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Ananiev and Alexis Mark led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
Portland kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 16-15. The second quarter followed the same rhythm, with the Pilots and Beavers going back and forth, tying things up at 23. Oregon State took control late, putting the Pilots at a 32-29 disadvantage heading into halftime.
After the half, Portland cut the deficit to 43-42 before scoring a quick five points to take a 47-43 lead with just under four minutes to play. The Beavers then rallied to tie it at 52-52 heading into the fourth quarter.
Portland started the fourth with a bang, going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Shearer's three, to seize a 57-52 lead with 7:10 to go in the fourth. The Beavers then fought back, evening things up at 65 with a late layup. Portland tried to take the lead with a late three from Burnham, but couldn't hit it, sending it to overtime. Oregon State fended off the Pilots late to win 76-72.
