KENT, Ohio – Kent State erupted late to put Portland away 76-57 Friday night at the M.A.C Center. Bol Dengdit led the Pilots with 12 points and Chris Austin added 10, but the Pilots committed 14 turnovers and were outrebounded by a 40-29 margin as a three-point deficit early in the second half got away late.
Dengdit was 5-for-7 from the field and added four rebounds in 16 minutes of action. Jermaine Ballisager Webb was also effective off the bench for the second straight game with eight points, three rebounds and three assists.
Portland shot 35 percent from the field and held the Golden Flashes (7-2) 45 percent overall.
Kent State jumped out to an early double digit lead at 29-19 behind strong rebounding and by forcing turnovers. The Pilots answered with a late run in the half capped by a three-pointer in the corner from Masic to cut the deficit to 31-28 at the break. Portland committed eight first half turnovers and gave up 10 offensive rebounds, but held the Golden Flashes to 34 percent from the field and no free throws.
Dengdit scored seven quick points in the second half to lead a surge and cut the deficit to 41-38, but the Golden Flashes countered with another run and led by as much as 12 points midway through the period. The margin got no closer than seven down the stretch as Kent State pulled away late.
The Golden Flashes shot 57 percent in the second half. The Pilots were effective when not turning over the basketball and had 15 assists on 16 made field goals. Kent State attempted 27 more field goals in the game than Portland, while the Pilots made 14-of-20 free throws and the Golden Flashes were just 2-for-2 at the charity stripe.
