PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots continue their unbeaten start, defeating the defending Ivy League champions in the Princeton Tigers 74-55 at the Chiles Center.
The Pilots (9-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Emme Shearer, who had 19 points and six steals. Maisie Burnham tacked on 18 points, four assists, two steals and two blocks, Alexis Mark chipped in as well with 11 points and three steals and Lainey Spear added 11 points and four rebounds off the bench.
Portland utilized great ball movement in Friday's game, piling up 15 assists on 28 made field goals. Burnham's four assists were the most for the Pilots and Rhyan Mogel also contributed with four assists of her own.
The Portland defense was a problem in Friday's game, forcing 29 Princeton turnovers while adding 15 steals. Those takeaways turned into 32 points on the offensive end of the floor. Shearer's six steals led the way individually for the Pilots and were the most by a Pilot since she posted seven steals in a game last season.
How It Happened
Portland started hot, putting together an 11-0 run early in the first, culminating in a bucket from Mark, to give them a 14-2 lead just two minutes in. Princeton cut into that lead slightly, but the Pilots still held a 22-16 lead after one.
Princeton took advantage of poor Pilot shooting, bringing the game to a tie at halftime 32-32. After intermission, Princeton snatched a lead as high as five to start the quarter. Portland answered back by going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Mark, to grab a 51-46 lead with 56 seconds to go in the third, a score that held through the end of the third. Portland played well near the basket, scoring 14 of their 19 points in the paint.
Portland kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Lainey Spear's layup, to grow the lead to 65-51 with 5:52 to go in the contest. The Pilots cruised the rest of the way to earn the 74-55 win.
