PORTLAND, Ore. -- Maisie Burnham scored a season-high 25 points as the Portland Pilots cruised to their 10th straight win, defeating the UTEP Miners 83-67 at the Chiles Center. The Pilots remain undefeated to start the year.
Burnham added five rebounds and four assists to her 25-point game to lead the Pilots (10-0). Emme Shearer helped out with 16 points, seven assists and four steals and Alexis Mark chipped in with 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals. McKelle Meek scored a season-high 14 points with four three-pointers.
The Pilots were productive from three-point land, making 10 threes on 30 attempts. Burnham and Meek each had four three-pointers on the day.
The Portland defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Sunday's game, forcing 21 UTEP turnovers while adding 10 steals. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Shearer's four steals led the way individually for the Pilots.
How It Happened
It was a back-and-forth first quarter before Portland went on a 5-0 run with 1:15 left in the first quarter to take a 20-16 lead. UTEP scored late in the quarter to cut Portland's lead to two at the end of the first.
Portland started the second quarter strong with an 8-0 run to take a 10-point lead early. The Miners cut into that lead before the quarter ended, but the Pilots still enjoyed a 38-31 advantage heading into halftime. Portland forced seven UTEP turnovers in the period and turned them into eight points.
The Pilots continued to fend off the Miners, who scrapped to keep it close throughout the penultimate quarter. But Portalnd pushed back, scoring 24 points in the quarter to take a 62-52 lead. McKelle Meek scored 11 points in the quarter.
Portland kept widening that lead, expanding it to 74-63 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Shearer's layup, to grow the lead to 81-63 with 3:03 to go in the contest. The Pilots cruised the rest of the way to an 83-67 win.
