SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Portland Pilots came up just short of completing the sweep, falling to the San Diego Aztecs in their series finale 7-1. The Pilots still clinch the series.
Joey Gartrell (0-1) got the ball to start for Portland (2-1) and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits, allowing no walks and striking out six. Five Pilots recorded hits on the day, with Gage Bruce's double being the only extra-base hit from Portland.
How it Happened
San Diego State put up four runs through the first six innings and kept the Pilots scoreless the whole way through. Trailing 4-0, the Pilots finally put a run on the board in the seventh inning after Bruce came across to score off a passed ball for the Aztecs. The Pilots were unable to get any closer, as San Diego State added three runs to their tally on the way to a 7-1 final.

» Portland pitchers faced 38 San Diego State hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and six fly balls while striking out eight.
» The Pilots drew five walks from San Diego State pitching.
» Gage Bruce had the lone extra-base hit for Portland on the day. His hit was the first of his Pilot career.

» Morgan Codron and Brock Gillis each made their season debuts on the mound. This was the collegiate debut for Codron.
