SALEM, Ore. – The Portland beach volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Corban Beach Volleyball Courts. The Pilots fell 5-0 to Sacramento State before defeating Bushnell by a 3-2 margin for the first win of the season.

The Pilots (1-2) lost a number of close matches to the Hornets to open the day, including the No. 1 team of Sophie Lee and Annika Stammberger pushing Sacramento State's top team to a third set, before falling 15-10.

Portland picked up the victory against Bushnell by clinching with the first three completed matches. Valerie Bruk and Elena Bullemer earned a 21-18, 21-17 win at No. 4 over Syndey Myhre and Laci Jespersen. The Pilots doubled the margin after Taylor Helle and Kili Robins won 21-13, 21-7 at No. 3 and then Elin Larsson and Leonie Freytag picked up a three-set win to clinch at No. 2. The duo knocked off Brooke Silvernail and Anessa Stotts 15-21, 21-16, 15-11.

The Pilots will next be in action for a doubleheader on Thursday, Feb. 29 at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif. Portland faces College of San Mateo at noon and then host West Valley College at 2 p.m.
